Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (UK)
SECR
A UK requirement for quoted companies and large unquoted companies and LLPs to report energy use and emissions in their annual report. vsmecap prepares the energy and carbon figures and methodology note from bills.
Step 1
Who it applies to
- Quoted companies, and large unquoted companies and LLPs as defined by the Companies Act size thresholds.
- Smaller companies are exempt but often report voluntarily or supply figures to a parent group.
Step 2
What you provide
| Electricity and gas bills | 12 months covering the financial year, kWh per meter |
| Financial year dates | To align billing periods |
| Intensity measure | e.g. turnover or headcount — you provide it |
Bill details are checked in your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored.
Step 3
What vsmecap prepares
SECR annual report annexSample layout
- UK energy use
- kWh for the reporting year
- Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions
- tCO₂e, using DESNZ conversion factors for the year
- Intensity ratio
- tCO₂e per chosen measure
- Methodology statement
- Factor set, version and approach
- Prior-year comparison
- Where available
Exports: JSON · CSV · watermarked PDF (XBRL in development)
- Energy-efficiency actions must be described by the company — not on bills.
- Figures are prepared for your accountant or auditor to review; vsmecap does not audit them.
Scope 1 and 2 from gas and electricity bills
- Can I work out Scope 1 and 2 from my bills?
- Yes. Gas bills give Scope 1 (fuel you burn on site) and electricity bills give Scope 2. Multiply each bill's kWh by the official DESNZ conversion factor, then divide by 1,000 to get tonnes of CO₂e.
- Which factors should I use?
- The latest UK government (DESNZ) greenhouse gas conversion factors. vsmecap currently uses the 2024 set: 0.20705 kg CO₂e per kWh for grid electricity and 0.18293 for natural gas.
- What makes the figures hold up to review?
- Twelve months with no gaps or duplicates, actual meter readings rather than estimates, and the meter numbers (MPAN/MPRN) matching each site.
